About Us
Welcome! You’ve found the website and central page for the Raleigh Women’s Art Collective. Here you can find information about what we are, what we do, and how you can get involved.
What is the Collective?
The collective is an organizational starting point for local community, with the goal to foster and facilitate spaces that are safe, collaborative, accessible, and women-centered, with a focus on artistic expression.
What does that look like?
The main element of the collective is organizational, meaning that our main focus is to host and facilitate events. The events that we host will almost always have an element of art or artistic expression. Most often, the events that we promote are women and queer-centered or are musical showcases of women in the triangle area. We try our best to catalogue events all over Raleigh and Cary.
Our other primary element is our monthly newsletter. This newsletter highlights local women creatives, provides an outline of monthly events, and fills your inbox with poetry, prose, and art.
What if I’m not a woman?
We encourage all individuals to participate in local community. While some events may be restricted to those identifying as women, there is plenty of space for men and non-binary friends. Anyone can reach out to become a collaborator, host an event, or take advantage of our events calendar. While the collective is open to participation from all, the focus remains on centering women’s voices in the creative space.
How can I participate?
There are many ways to participate with the collective! The lowest-commitment level of participation is to simply subscribe to our newsletter. This will allow you to receive a monthly email full of visual, literary, and musical art by local women who are highlighted each month, as well as information about events and performances by women in the Triangle.
Participate in Events: One of the collective’s regular events is our seasonal showcase. Because the showcase is invite-only, we ask that you reach out to Teresa through the contact form to obtain an invitation. We are always looking for performers, hosts, and audience members. For our other events, check the calendar to see what the requirements are. Some events may require a sign-up to perform.
Get Help Hosting Your Event: If you have an idea for an event and would like help organizing it, you are more than welcome to reach out and one of our contributors will aid you in planning, promoting, and executing your event. If you’d like to participate but don’t have an idea for an event, you can volunteer to host one of our regular events, such as poetry nights.
Volunteer your Business: If you are a business that is looking to spice up a quiet night or host an event in your space, please reach out through the contact form. A contributor will help you narrow down what kind of event you’d like to host, if it’s one-time or recurring, and help you set up and run your event.
Become a Contributor: We are always looking to recruit contributors to write for our monthly highlights and become organizational community advocates. Most contributors have a passion for artistic expression, enjoy talking to people and being facilitators, and have some degree of comfort with writing. If this sounds like a role that appeals to you, please reach out.
Finally, you do not have to be a creative to participate! If you are interested in engaging with the arts but don’t have a work of your own to offer, you are always invited to attend events and provide support through observation. Our audience members are crucial to the realization of this space; without eyes to witness and ears to listen, there would be no one to perform to. The collective’s events are always free to attend, so if you don’t plan on performing, just show up! We also promote external events that may have a ticket cost, so check before you arrive.
